New Year, Not a New You

New year but not a new you!

I confess.  I’ve bought into it in the past.  You’ll see it, I’m sure.  Whether you’re on Instagram, TikTok, or watching one of your favorite shows early in the new year and a commercial pops up.

You see it everywhere:  New Year, New You!

And I want to say this right now:  don’t fall for it.  It doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, it is not the year of the new you!

Don’t stop reading, please!  Read on, stick with me!

So here’s the thing that I want you to know.  I want you to not go into this new year thinking it’s the year of the “new and improved” you.

Because to do so implies there is something wrong with the old you.

And you are already awesome.  Period.

Do you maybe need to make some improvements?  Of course you do.  We all do.  I know I do.  And that’s just fine.  We should all, always, be striving to be better!

But the current you has gifts and talents.  You are amazing.  Perhaps you’re an awesome cook.  Perhaps you’re a great friend.  Perhaps you’re awesome at your job.  There are gazillion things you’re awesome at.  And if you can’t come up with a long list, ask those you love and who love you back.  They’ll tell you all the reasons you’re amazing.

Do you wish that you worked out more, or ate better? Or spent more quality time with friends? Or worked harder at your classes?

All of that is great!  If you have wishes and dreams for yourself, that’s great!  That gives you something to strive for!

And this new year absolutely, 100% should be about goals!  Set goals.  Get serious about what it is you want to achieve.  Write them down.  Get support.  Connect with like-minded people who can help you be accountable, whom you can keep accountable, and with whom you’ll have fun working towards your goals.

But be sure that you understand:  there is nothing wrong with you now.  And honestly, I believe that that is the kind of thinking that will make it harder, not easier, to achieve your goals.  We change when we love ourselves.  We change when we value ourselves.  We change when we work from a place of love.

The new year is not about a new you.  It’s about you, getting better, being better, feeling better.

Will you be imperfect? Yes.  Will you make mistakes? Yes.  Will you lose sight of your goals and slip off track?  Yes.

But striving and achieving isn’t about perfection.  It’s about learning, and growing, and trying.  And never, ever giving up on you.

You wouldn’t give up on a friend.  You wouldn’t give up on your kids.  You won’t let your kids settle for C’s if you know they can get A’s.  So don’t give up on you.  Don’t let yourself settle.

This is the year of you. The old you, the wonderful you, becoming better.

The old you has always been awesome.

Your job for the new year:  never forget just how wonderful you are.  Connect with that reality more, because remembering just how wonderful you are will empower you and help you take off for greater heights, more achievements, more goals set and attained.

And then: share more of your awesome with the world.  Because we need you, being your best and brightest.

And if you aren’t sure where to start?  Let’s chat. We would love to help you be your very best you.

But either way: become more of you in this new year.

xo,

Cori
